Ranking of Games

Black/White

Black and White are easily the best pokemon games ever made, and I don't think that's a hot take anymore. This was the first pokemon game I ever played and I really started on a high note. This game has an amazing and suprisingly thought-provoking story about the nature of pokemon battles and whether humans have the right to capture them and use them for their own pleasure which is so cool considering where the series is these days. Unova, despite it's linear nature has such a wonerful and distinctive design that I really love and the choice to change the environment based on the version played is super inspired and I wish they did that more often. I also think the pokemon designs in this game are generally good and all of you guys are just haters.

Best Gen 5 Mons

Best NPCs

Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald

I swear gen 3 is what gen 1 dick-riders think gen 1 is. This game is so fun, has great pokemon design, and has buckets of content. Maybe the only thing I have to say negative about this game is the tendency of the older generations to be quite difficult and require a little too much grinnding to get through certain gyms and this gen was probably the worst perpatrator for me (minus some other elite 4's/champions but that's to be expected). Other than than the grinding though gen 3 never ceased to be a wonderful pseudo-nostalgic feeling.

Sun/Moon

If these games weren't super condescending in how badly they hand-hold you, I dare say that they would have been one of the best games in the franchise objectively. The story on this game is so good, it's dark and character driven and although it doesn't exceed B/W but it gets pretty damn close. Team Skull is the only 'non-evil' team that has worked so far in my opinion and that's because they are still a major nuisance within Alola even if they're not trying to destroy the world, like they still took over a town and kicked out all the residents, and they serve as a solid distraction to the main threat of the Aether Foundation.

I really like most of the pokemon designs to come out of this game and maybe it's because I'm getting older but this was the last generation whose designs all truly felt like Pokemon designs, if you get what I mean. I love the idea of regional variants and if any gimmick was going to be carried through the generations, I'm glad it was this one and not Z-stones. Oh, and speaking of z-stones, those sucked but at the very least they had post-game mega evolution so was it really that bad?

Diamond/Pearl/Platinum

Red/Blue

There is nothing in the world that could convince me that this gen is as good as some dick-riders claim it to be. Like I understand it's limitations are due to the limitations of video games at the time but I mostly just rate it this low to spite the people who think the series peaked here. Like this game is good, it's fun, but it's also super basic in it's mechanics. Also keep in mind that I think the gap between gen 1 and gen 6 is still pretty big and this is the biggest bridge between the top six and the bottom three if you get what I mean.

With all that being said Red and Blue the characters are absolute icons to this day and age in this franchise and I really like the layout and open nature of Kanto. I think for what it is this game is super, super solid, it just doesn't stack up well against the other generations, and I'm heavily biased.

X/Y

Gen 6 has a very special place in my heart and maybe doesn't deserve to be even this high, but this gen is so easy to replay and I was so detached from my original team, which maybe wasn't a good thing, that I would just replay this game over and over and I've racked over 600 hours on this game. Mega-evolution is the best gimmick that this franchise ever had, that's barely even an opinion at this point. I love the rollerskates as a movement option in this game, they were so smooth and I loved doing tricks with certain stick movements and I genuinely don't understand why they haven't brought the rollerskates back as a movement option for more recent gens.

I can't lie, with the exception of the megas the pokemon design this generation was pretty weak, however trans icon Sylveon ate and left no crumbs.

Scarlet/Violet

Sword/Shield

Slight disclaimer, I have a lot of negative feelings toward these games due to the controversy prior to their release and honestly I would not have played Shield if my Grandma hadn't unknowingly bought it for me. I just feel like gen 8 was Game Freak testing the waters to see how little effort they could put into a release and still keep people satisifed. They consistently lied to their fans about the production of the game leading up to the game, they raised expectations on certain elements of the game with little intention to follow through and they just didn't released a quality game in my eyes.

Aside from that, the pokemon designs are hit and miss for me, the ones I love, I LOVE, but most of the rest of the designs I'm just very meh on. I have beef with the fact that Leon's signature pokemon is a Charizard. I don't like that the box legendaries are post-game catches and instead you get some other random, and quite frankly ugly, legendary to carry through the elite 4. Speaking of the box legendaries, these are probably the worst designed box legendaries, barely beating out S/V, like it's a dog holding a sword and even worse their appearance on the box isn't their regular appearance, to get that appearance you have to remove the ability to put an item on them for a type addition and a slight stat buff, maybe I'm just a hater but that is literally the dumbest thing I've ever heard. They're literally majorly nerfing their box legendaries by reducing their stats or removing the ability to use items on them.

I can't complain about the quality of life improvements but I will say that there is an experience to deciding to change a member of your team and having to head to the pokecenter to switch your pokemon out rather than just opening your inventory and switching it in 2 seconds flat.
