Predator
Review
Predator is another staple Creature Feature which is more widely known due to the presence of Arnold Schwarzenegger and the action-based elements. This movie was everything I could realistically ever want in one of these action horrors. Testosterone-fueled male bonding, a really cool alien stalking and killing them and yea that’s about the appeal for me. This movie actually ended up working surprisingly well for me and it probably would have been a 10/10 if I didn’t have beef with the sound design but as is it’s a solid 8/10.
This movie is about a group of military guys who are brought down to help with some sort of terrorist thing and after they solve that problem they realize that the real issue is a mysterious ‘Predator’ which is hunting them down and efficiently killing them one by one.
This movie hits every single mark for me like I mentioned above. I love horror movies with almost exclusively male casts because the dynamic is so atypical from traditional horror. In this movie specifically the cast being military men means that the testosterone levels are cranked up to their absolute limit which makes the movie so much funnier and more enjoyable. As I said in my mid-movie thoughts, seeing almost exclusively men get slaughtered, and in such a horrific and intense way, means the movie strikes a good chord with me.
The gore throughout this movie is super impressive and it makes the danger these characters are in feel all the more real and it just worked super well for me.
The predator has got to be the coolest monster I’ve seen so far in all of these monster movies. I love op characters that play with their victims and have no regard for their life, only for their pleasure and the predator FUCKING DELIVERED!!!! Literally the ending where it killed itself in order to get to Arnold Schwarzenagger, I almost lost it. It’s laugh was so cool and so intimidating and is probably the most iconic evil laugh I’ve ever heard, it was just perfection, no notes. The predator was so scary and it’ll probably be at the top of my list for favorite monster for quite a while.
HOWEVER, as much as I love this movie I have one note and it’s a big one, the volume of the music. The music was SO LOUD. The characters would be climbing a rope and the music would be so ridiculously loud that it would make it seem like someone’s being skinned alive on screen when that was just not the case. It was so freaking distracting and it was a problem throughout the WHOLE MOVIE. It was to the point where sometimes it was hard to hear what the characters were saying and it just feels like such a big and depressing oversight.
Other than that though it was an amazing experience which scratched all of the guilty pleasures in my brain. I’ll definitely watch it again and now I really want to check out Prey which came out this last year cause it looks pretty good.
