Review
I’ve been waiting to watch this movie for three years now and I’m so glad that I finally got to watch it and that I enjoyed it as much as I did.
The movie is about a group of 20 year olds who are road-tripping to go see a football game in Louisiana. On the way one of their two cars breaks down and two people are forced to stay behind to try to find a way to get the car fixed. The two characters come across a derelict town and begin looking for the fan belt they need to get their car started. They come across the mechanic while he’s grieving the loss of someone close to him and he tells them that he can come help in 30 minutes. While they wait the characters go to a ‘house of wax’ in town and realize that everything in there, including the building itself is made of wax. As they explore the building they realize that all the art in their is made by one Trudy Sinclair and one Vincent Sinclair. After that they follow the mechanic to his house where he has their fan belt. When Wade enters the house he is attacked and then turned into a wax statue to be placed in the museum. The seemingly occupied town is actually only made up of 2 people, Vincent and Bo Sinclair and they lure people off of turnpikes in order to add their wax statues to the town. In the end the final girl and her twin brother kill both of the Sinclair brothers and leave them to die in their house of wax as it crumbles, melts, and boils around them.
This movie was a lot of fun to watch from the moment that Carly and Wade enter the town, before that it meanders a little but since I was watching it with a friend it wasn’t too bad. I wish we got some more time with Paris Hilton, her boyfriend, and the other irrelevant dude because they literally got absolutely no screen time and them being included felt like it was more to buff out the kill count. Also why is Paris Hilton in so many mediocre, nichely-loved horror projects? Like I love it but the stuff she’s in is so weird.
This movie is another one of those aesthetic masterpieces with all the wax and the abundance of undergrounds rooms filled with pipes and industrial stuff. Literally everything in the town is so cool and all the visuals in this movie never fail to awe me. When the ‘House of Wax’ was like melting it was literally everything, seeing it cave in on itself as the brothers lie dead on top of each other in the basement, just as they were born, was so fucking sick.
The kills in this movie were actually sick, there was only one kill I didn’t like and it was because the kill was offscreen. I think my favorite kill was Wade’s kill because seeing his whole mouth fall off was so sick and the way you see him in wax but still alive is so freaking cool but so creepy.
I honestly really liked both of the Sinclair brothers, Bo really reminded me of Jack from the Shining with how unhinged he was and I honestly thought it was so funny the way he refused to die. I really, really loved Vincent. I really enjoyed the fact that he was just a manipulated artist. The idea that he followed in his mother’s footsteps to become an artist in order to put beauty back into the world just as he thought his face took beauty out of the world is so freaking cool.
Now onto the issues I had with this movie. So the movie kept trying to draw a connection between the Sinclair Brothers and Carly and her twin brother and I genuinely could not understand what I was supposed to get out of it because they lowkey dropped it when the chase began which is when we had the most screen time of both sets of twins interacting. My other big issue was the amount of romantic chemistry that Carly and her TWIN BROTHER had. Literally they had more romantic chemistry than Carly had with Wade, it was really weird. I honestly would have preferred if they were just like childhood friends that grew apart while the guy kept leeching off her family
But yea anyways I really liked this movie, it was really fun to watch and really cool to look at, I will definitely be watching it again sometime soon.
